In this research, researcher aims to find the novel characters’ personality codes and signs in the 2009 movie adaption of Oscar Wilde’s “the picture of Dorian Gray.” researcher also tries to criticize the personality of main characters, both protagonis t and antagonis t, and aimed to decode the cultural signs of these characters. For a better unders tanding, researcher chooses eleven crucial scenes of the movie. These scenes are peak and important parts of the s tory (both novel and movie). So, she compares these scenes to novel parts in accordance of personality and cultural signs based on Umberto Eco’s theory of signs. For a better unders tanding of the purposes of the novel, firs t the researcher talks about the main characters of the novel and the setting. Generally, she talks about their weak and s trong points and their point of view towards life. Then for decoding the scenes and having a deeper look through the characters and decoding their personalities, researcher analyzes eleven chosen scenes. For an easier unders tanding, tables are used in this research.

In his book “semiotics and the philosophy of language”, Umberto Eco talked about codes as a main part of a language. He said Saussure speaks vaguely of “le code de la langue”. Saussure did not say that a language is a code, but there is a code of language. But after some scientific events, the code wave cres ted and the landslide effect of the new category did not allow enough time to make subtle formal dis tinctions. Thus, one can record such expressions as artis tic codes, cultural codes, genetic codes and so on. As it can be seen, there are numerous types of codes and analyzing each of them goes to one different category.
